A Chip Under a Store Light Is Not Information

Paint stores are lit to sell paint. The lighting is bright, neutral and even, which is the one condition your house will never be in. A chip that looked like a soft greige on the rack turns green in a north-facing room, goes yellow under warm bulbs at night, and washes out completely on a west wall at five in the afternoon when the sun comes in low off the water.

So we do not hand you chips and leave. We put two coats of the real product, in the real sheen, on boards, and we hang those boards in the rooms they are meant for. Then we come back and look at them with you at two different times of day. It is a slower way to choose and it is the only way that predicts what you will actually live with.

What the Consultation Covers

Color, honestly. We will tell you what a color is likely to do in your specific rooms, which undertone is going to fight your floors, and where a shade you love is going to be too much. What we will not do is pretend there is a correct answer. It is your house.

Sheen, which is not a taste question. This is the part we are firm about. Sheen is a performance decision per surface, and we will make a recommendation and explain the trade. Flat hides the wall and cannot be cleaned. Gloss cleans beautifully and hides nothing at all. Eggshell, satin and semi-gloss step between the two, and every step you take up buys durability at the cost of forgiveness.

How your walls will take it. In the pre-war bungalows around Rose Park and Belmont Heights, the plaster was floated by hand and has soft waves in it that nobody has ever noticed, because it has always been painted flat. Move that wall to satin and the waves appear. On the post-war stucco tracts further east, and on the flat, uniform drywall in newer work, you can carry more sheen without penalty.

Where the sun lands. South and west elevations here take a lot of direct afternoon sun, and strong pigments on those walls fade faster than the same color on the north side of the same house. That affects exterior color choice more than most people expect, and it is worth knowing before you commit to a saturated door or a dark body color.

The exterior as its own problem. Salt air off the harbor and the breakwater is hard on coatings, and the morning damp means an exterior day does not start when the crew arrives, it starts when the surface is dry and above the dew point. We plan the sheen split accordingly: low sheen on the stucco field so the hairline cracks and patches every wall here carries stay quiet, satin on fascia, casings and the garage door where washability matters.

What You Get

A written spec that names the color and the finish for every surface, ceilings, walls, trim, doors and exterior elements, so nothing gets guessed at when the paint is ordered. If you go on to have us paint it, the consultation is folded into the job. If you take the spec to another crew, that is fine too, and it is still a better brief than most crews are ever handed.
